Invisalign clear aligners are a popular alternative to other forms of dental alignment therapy. They’re especially well-known among older teens and adults. But do the advantages of Invisalign live up to the product’s reputation? In this post, we’ll reveal what you need to know about this important topic.

Seven Things You Need to Know about Invisalign

They say that knowledge is power. This is certainly true when it comes to being a well-informed dental patient. With that in mind, let’s look at seven important facts about Invisalign aligners:

  1. Invisalign is intended for mild to moderate cases of misalignment. Patients with advanced alignment issues will probably want to consider other forms of treatment. Your dentist can give you more information.
  2. Invisalign aligners should be worn 20-22 hours per day. This is important for getting the maximum benefits from the appliance. Of course, you can remove your aligners for meals, brushing and flossing, and rinsing your mouth. By all means, you should maintain daily oral hygiene during your course of Invisalign therapy.
  3. Invisalign is part of an overall treatment strategy. Keeping regular appointments with your cosmetic dentist is important for achieving optimum results. Your dentist will track your progress and make helpful suggestions along the way.
  4. Invisalign aligners require a reasonable amount of care. This includes cleaning the product daily. It’s important to never, ever use toothpaste for this purpose. Most toothpaste brands contain abrasives that can damage the aligner. Mild liquid soap, like the kind you might use to wash your hands, is a much better choice. You should scrub the aligners gently with a soft bristle toothbrush to remove stains and saliva.
  5. Invisalign results typically take a few months to become apparent.  Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while for the benefits to be noticeable. Your teeth will respond to the treatment, if you give them the time they need.
  6. Invisalign aligners come with a small, plastic protective case. Most people can easily tuck the case into a shirt pocket or purse. You should always store your aligner in this case when it’s not in use. Otherwise you risk misplacing or losing the product.
  7. Invisalign aligners are heat-sensitive. You should keep them away from space heaters, direct sunlight, and heating vents in the winter. Make sure that children or pets cannot get their hands (or paws) on the product.

Is Invisalign Not the Best Option for You? Don’t Worry.

Your teeth and gums are unique. A solution that works great for a friend or neighbor may not be the best option for you. This is sometimes true when it comes to Invisalign.

If that’s the case, then your dentist can recommend alternatives, such as ceramic or low-profile metal braces instead. He or she will discuss your options with you during your upcoming appointment. Whichever form of treatment you choose, you’ll end up with a beautiful smile that will dazzle your family and friends. That’s a great way to lay the foundation for a happy, healthy future.
