Without faltering, you brush your teeth twice daily, floss nightly, and visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup; however, is your oral hygiene routine all you need? There might be another important piece to the puzzle that holds the secret to lasting oral health. Believe it or not, reaching for some sugarless gum can support a healthy smile.

Is Gum Bad for My Teeth?

You might have heard gum is bad for your teeth, so you only chew it occasionally. While gum containing sugar can increase your risk of tooth decay, sugarless products can actually lessen your likeliness for cavities. Studies have shown chewing gum can prevent tooth decay, strengthen your enamel, and increase your saliva production.

Gum enhances your saliva flow to keep your mouth moist to combat oral bacteria growth. Your saliva removes food particles and bacteria in between brushing and flossing. Grabbing a piece of gum after you’ve finished lunch or dinner will limit the exposure cavity-causing bacteria has on your teeth. One study found you can enjoy a 41% reduction in tooth decay after just one year of chewing sugarless gum daily. Dental professionals recommend chewing a piece after every meal to improve your dental health.

What Should I Look for When Picking Gum?

As previously mentioned, you want to choose gum that’s sugar-free. You’ll also want to look for one that contains a natural sweetener called Xylitol. Studies have shown it can reduce bacteria growth in plaque. It can also neutralize acids made by bacteria. Both benefits can help fight cavities to keep your smile healthy.

Your dentist also recommends looking for a substance called casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate. Also known as Recaldent, it can remineralize your enamel to stop or slow the progression of tooth decay; however, people who are allergic to milk should skip the ingredient.

You’ll also want to look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. This tells you the product has been voluntarily tested for safety and effectiveness when used for your dental health.

Preserve Your Oral Health

Although chewing gum can improve your oral health, it isn’t an alternative to brushing, flossing, and regular dental care. You still need to follow your oral hygiene routine at home and see your dentist semi-annually for a cleaning and checkup. Don’t forget to limit your consumption of sugary treats and drinks. Instead, satisfy your sweet tooth and freshen your breath with your favorite sugar-free gum.
