You’re never too old to invest in a healthy, straight smile. If you missed your chance for braces as a teen or you’ve experienced orthodontic regression, you might be a candidate for Invisalign. The discreet clear aligners gradually move your teeth without the noticeability of brackets and wires. If you just need to close gaps between your upper teeth or make other minor adjustments, you might wonder if you can use Invisalign on only the top. Although it is possible, it isn’t always a good idea, and here’s why.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign differs from what you might envision when picturing braces. It doesn’t involve any brackets or wires. Instead, your dentist takes a digital impression of your mouth and uses advanced technology to map the movement of your teeth. The information is then fabricated into a series of aligners. You’ll wear each aligner for about 1 week. You must commit to keeping the aligner in your mouth for at least 22 hours per day. In about 12 months, you’ll have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.
Can I Get Invisalign on Just My Top Teeth?
Typically, treatment with Invisalign involves both arches; however, you can treat only either the upper or lower teeth depending on your needs. As with any orthodontic treatment, you’ll require a consultation to determine if you’re a candidate for single arch options. Not everyone qualifies for only one aligner because it can affect occlusion, so there may no longer be balance between your upper and lower arches.
Generally, patients who want to make minor adjustments are candidates for a single aligner. Complex issues, especially those involving the bite, will require both arches to be corrected. If they aren’t, it can lead to irreversible dental damage, jaw pain, and other serious complications. As a result, single arch orthodontics are recommended to fix:
- Minor gaps or spacing concerns
- Slightly crooked front teeth
- A tooth tipped out of alignment
- Orthodontic replace
- Teeth in your smile zone
When fixing only the upper teeth, your treatment can take as few as 4 to 6 months, but every case is unique. It’s important to wear your aligner as recommended to ensure there aren’t any delays in your journey to a straight smile.
Invest in a Straight Smile
If you only want to fix your top teeth, you can expect your treatment to cost less than when needing a pair of aligners. Nowadays, many dental insurances can be used to help offset the cost. You can invest in your oral health and self-esteem using a nearly invisible solution.
